Using a Discovery Hunt App, the Burleigh-Morton Behavioral Health Coalition (BMBHC) will be partnering with Bismarck Public Schools during Red Ribbon Week, October 23rd-31st, 2023, to encourage open communication between youth and their parents about underage alcohol and drug use.
Easy, fun, and effective, the Red Ribbon Week Discovery Hunt will be made accessible to 5th graders in the Bismarck area. To join, a student or parent will download the Goosechase app onto their phone, enter the code “BISMARCK”, and instantly be connected to the hunt. Each day of Red Ribbon Week is a specific theme and four missions that families may complete at home. Every “mission” has daily do’s, daily role plays, daily parent info, and skills for managing stress.
The purpose of the Red Ribbon Week Discovery Hunt is to provide comprehensive, digestible substance abuse prevention information to youth and their parents in an engaging and bonding way. The parents don’t have to give personal information and can decide what missions they want to participate in.
John Wangen, School Counselor for Jeanette Myhre Elementary School said, “Parent involvement is essential in helping kids talk openly about peer pressure and the risks involved in dangerous and illegal substances. It is our hope that this Red Ribbon App will foster these discussions and help both parents and kids have these meaningful and preventative conversations.”
