[ARCHIVED] Quiet Rail Zone – Train Horns

As part of the Main Avenue roadway lane conversion project, new traffic signal controllers were installed in existing cabinets. To install the new controllers, the communications were disconnected from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway pre-emption equipment. In doing so, BNSF railway resumed blowing the train horns. The railroad pre-emption is not pre-empting the traffic signal controllers; therefore, the quiet rail zone has been temporarily discontinued and the trains are blowing the horns.

The new traffic signal controllers are not currently integrating with the railroad pre-emption equipment. The contractor and the equipment supplier are working to resolve the problem. The disconnection of the of the pre-emption from the traffic controller will not create safety issues.

Once the problem has been resolved, BNSF will be notified and their technicians will test the system. If satisfied, they will issue an order to reinstate the quiet zone and the trains will discontinue sounding their horns.

We are working as fast as we can to resolve this issue.

This lane closure will be in place until approximately the end of the week.

Your patience is greatly appreciated.
