[ARCHIVED] Women’s Health Celebrated April 28 at Bismarck Employee Event

Each spring, communities across the nation celebrate Women’s Health. Bismarck will host an event for female employees of the City of Bismarck, Burleigh County, Bismarck Park District, University of Mary, United Tribes Technical College, Rasmussen College, and Bismarck State College celebrating the importance of women’s health April 28, at the Bismarck Civic Center, Upper Level Exhibit Hall, Prairie Rose Rooms. Doors open at 4:00 p.m., the event begins at 5:00 p.m. At 5:15 p.m. keynote speaker, Barb Marchello will discuss local foods and North Dakota food traditions. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend mini-workshops focusing on whole grain flour, outdoor activities offered by North Dakota Game and Fish, sleep concerns, and money management and to browse through more than forty vendor booths.

The event is designed to remind women about the need to take responsibility for their own health through greater knowledge and understanding and encourage them to take steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. The theme for the Women’s Health Event, “Nourishing Body and Mind” is intended to empower women to make personal health and wellness a top priority.

Women are often the caregivers for their spouses, children and parents and forget to focus on their own health. Research shows that when women take care of themselves, the health of their family and communities improves. The observance encourages women to be examples for all, by incorporating these important steps into their daily lives:
• Getting at least 2 ½ hours of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both each week.
• Eating a nutritious diet.
• Visiting a health-care professional for regular checkups and preventive screenings.
• Avoiding risky behaviors, like smoking and not wearing a seatbelt.
• Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office, Women’s Health supports women’s health events to encourage women to make wellness a priority.
