At approximately 12:28 PM on Thursday, February 6, the Central Dakota Communications Center received a report of a garbage truck on fire in a parking lot at the 3000 block of Jericho Road. The Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched to investigate. The first arriving fire crew reported a recycling collection truck that had dumped its load of materials in a vacant parking lot. The load of recycling material was on fire. The fire crew established command and pulled a hose line to attack the fire. As another fire crew arrived they were assigned to secure a water supply and assist with extinguishing the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, an overhaul operation was conducted to find any remaining hot spots.
Three fire department apparatus and 9 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The Bismarck Police Department assisted with scene control. There were no injuries to the vehicle operator. There were no injuries to first responders. There was some fire and smoke damage to the cargo area of the truck.
The truck operator was in the truck when he noticed smoke coming from the back of the vehicle. The operator pulled the truck off the road and into a vacant parking lot where he was able to safely dump the load.
