[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Police Officer Involved Shooting

An officer involved shooting occurred this evening at 11:28 p.m. at 32nd Street and Rosser Avenue. One Bismarck Police officer was involved. A 42 year old Mandan man was shot by police and was taken to a local hospital by Metro Area Ambulance where he was pronounced dead at 11:51 p.m. The officer was not injured.

On March 6th at 11:11 p.m. Bismarck Police responded to 3240 East Thayer Avenue. A caller called 911 and reported there was an intoxicated male in the back of this building armed with a shotgun who wanted to kill the caller. As officers were in route, additional information was the caller was with a neighbor in back of 3220 East Thayer. There was additional information broadcast that one of these two was armed with a handgun.

Dispatch told the caller to move to an area of safety but the caller refused. The caller then reported the male was walking toward him with a shotgun.

As officers arrived, one officer saw the suspect standing in the hallway of 3240 East Thayer, standing next to a long gun. That information was broadcast to other officers arriving at the scene. The suspect then ran out the back door of the apartment building, running northbound toward Rosser Avenue.

An officer commanded the suspect to show his hands and get on the ground. The suspect refused to obey commands to show his hands and get on the ground. The officer believing the suspect to be armed and dangerous discharged his rifle striking the suspect. Police administered first aid. Metro Area Ambulance responded and transported the suspect to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have recovered a shotgun from the apartment hallway.
The name of the deceased man is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The officer has eight years of experience with BPD. The officer has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The case has been turned over to BCI for investigation.
