[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department Responds to Carbon Monoxide Incident

At 2:37 a.m., Nov.14th, the Bismarck Fire Department responded to an incident in a Bismarck home, with two residents ill from the suspected presence of carbon monoxide. Upon arrival firefighters administered emergency medical aid for the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning to the two residents. Both residents were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment.

Firefighters assessed the residence for carbon monoxide levels, and found substantial levels, even after the home had been aired out.

The source of the carbon monoxide was identified as the boiler for the hot water heating system, which was not burning and/or venting properly.

The Bismarck Fire Department recommends that all building owners have a licensed contractor inspect and maintain your building or home’s heating system regularly. This is necessary to prevent excess carbon monoxide from being created, and potentially released into occupied areas of the building. It is also very important that any building that is heated by appliances that burn fossil fuels have carbon monoxide detectors placed to alert occupants should a release occur.
