[ARCHIVED] Remembering The Impact of Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week (1) Flyer

Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health invites you to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23-31. Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles. It is a time when young people and adults wear red to show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

This awareness campaign originated in California to remember Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique (Kiki) S. Camarena, who gave his life to expose a multibillion-dollar drug operation. Camarena served in the U.S. Marine Corps, as a Calexico fireman, Calexico police officer, and an Imperial County deputy sheriff. Each year from Oct. 23-31, the eight-day celebration symbolizes intolerance for drugs in our schools, workplaces, and communities as youth make the decision to live substance free.

According to the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 5% of North Dakota youth use cigarettes and 18% used e-cigarettes within the last 30 days. North Dakotans are invited to join thousands of others across the country who are planning to wear red and find unique ways to celebrate living a drug-free lifestyle. NDQuits and local public health units provide a wealth of resources to help communities quit commercial tobacco and other harmful substances.

BBPH recognizes that the first step to living a better quality of life is by investing in your health. The office assists those with nicotine dependence by providing educational materials and treatment resources. In addition, NDQuits offers free support and coaching statewide through a phone or web program.

“You have the power to quit, and we have the resources to help you. Quitting starts by making a commitment to yourself and your future. Let today be the first day of your journey of recovery from harmful substances,” said Alex Menke, tobacco prevention specialist. The professionals at Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health are ready to help.

Tobacco users can get help enrolling in NDQuits with assistance from BBPH or by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW. TTY users may call 800-842-4681. Enrollment in NDQuits is also available online at hhs.nd.gov/health/ndquits.
