[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Firefighters Rescue Ducklings from Storm Sewer

BFD Duck Rescue

BISMARCK, N.D. — Firefighters from the Bismarck Fire Department rescued eight ducklings that had fallen into a storm sewer beside Igoe Park. The area is located across the street from Fire Station 3 on Tyler Parkway in NW Bismarck

The rescue operation began on the morning of July 10, when firefighters from Fire Station 3 saw the ducklings fall through a grating into the storm sewer as their mother attempted to lead them across Tyler Parkway into Igoe Park.

The fire crew crossed the street and accessed the storm sewer by removing a cover. One firefighter climbed down into the drain with a bucket while other firefighters coaxed the ducklings toward him through the open grating above. The whole operation to remove the ducks from the storm drain took approximately 1 ½ hours.

Throughout the rescue, the mother duck remained close by.  When the ducklings were safely removed from the sewer, they were reunited with their mother and the family waddled off into Igoe Park.
