[ARCHIVED] Grilling Safety Tips from the Bismarck Fire Department

BISMARCK, ND - Grilling is a great time for friends and family to have cookouts. The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind residents that before you grill make sure your grill is working properly and follow a few simple safety tips.

• Before using the grill, be sure the grill is clean of debris. Make sure the gas ports are clear of obstructions that may affect the burners.
• Be sure to place the grill on a level surface, away from siding, deck railings and out from under the eaves of the building.
• Always use your gas or charcoal grill outside.
• Check the gas cylinder connections and hose for leaks each time you connect the propane tank. A light soap and water solution applied to the hose and connections will quickly reveal escaping propane by creating bubbles. If you determine your grill has a gas leak, turn off the gas tank and have the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
• Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in the grill and grease tray below the grill to prevent potential grease fires.
• When cooking use long-handled grilling tools and mitt to reduce the chance of burns from heat and flames.
• Stay alert when grilling. Never leave the cooking/grill area unattended.
• Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Declare a three-foot "safe zone" around the grill. Place the grill a safe distance from lawn games, play areas and foot traffic.
• If you use a charcoal grill be sure to dispose of the ashes properly. Do not just throw them in the garbage. Place the ashes in a metal container and fill with water to ensure they are extinguished before disposing of them.
• If you live in an apartment building, check with your apartment manager to see if grills are allowed. The fire code does not allow charcoal grills on decks or balconies of apartment buildings.
