Pavement / Roadways

Responsibilities

The Engineering Department oversees the design and construction of asphalt and concrete streets in the city right-of-way. This does not include private streets such as those in mobile home courts and certain developments. Those areas are maintained by the owner of the mobile home court or by a home owner’s association or business. View a map of private streets in the city.

The Engineering Department performs a visual assessment of all city streets. The information is put into a computerized database to determine which ones require contracted maintenance. A citywide street repair project is contracted every year to fix areas most in need of maintenance. The maintenance is designed to extend the service life of the street so that costly, major reconstruction is not necessary. The costs associated with the street maintenance are special assessed to the benefiting lots in the neighborhood. The work is done by a private contractor.

Public Works Street Repairs

In addition to the annual street repair project overseen by the Engineering Department, the Public Works Department street crews perform routine street maintenance to fix areas that have potholes and cracked or broken pavement. These repairs are usually in areas that are outside the annual street repair project, or areas that need temporary repairs to stand in until more permanent work can be done. If you need to report a large pothole or hazardous pavement condition, contact the Public Works Department at 701 355-1700.
