Roads and Streets

Public Works Service Operations Department offers the “Adopt-A-Roadway Program” to organizations that want to do community service and pick up litter from roadway ditches.

The City recognizes the participant with their name on a sign in the designated area and provide trash bags, safety vests, and paper pickers.  The City will pick up filled trash bags and bulky debris placed at the edge of the roadway/ditch area.

We appreciate each of these groups giving their time to help in our quest to keep Bismarck beautiful and litter-free.

Mailbox Placement

It is the property owner's responsibility to comply with the requirements of mailbox placement to avoid damage to mail boxes and to City equipment during snow removal and street sweeping operations. If mailboxes are not in compliance, the City will not be responsible for any repair costs to the property.

City Ordinance No. 10-05-05 does require that the poles used for the support of mailboxes, general delivery boxes or receptacles may not be less than thirty-six inches or more than forty-eight inches behind the face of the curb. The front of the mailbox must not extend beyond the curb into the street.

1. Poles used for the support of mail boxes, general delivery boxes or receptacles for the delivery of periodicals, fliers or other circulars may not be less than thirty-six inches nor more than forty-eight inches behind the face of the curb. The supporting pole must be set at a height not exceeding thirty-six inches above the grade at the top of the curb. If a street or alley is improved without a curb or gutter section, the pole location must be measured from the pavement edge.
2. Mail boxes must be placed at least six feet from a fire hydrant.
3. This section may not be construed to be in conflict with the existing requirements for mail box placement established by the postmaster general of the United States Postal Service.

Mission

The mission of the Roads and Streets Department is providing high quality maintenance services in a timely and effective manner to promote the safety and welfare of the city residents.

Responsibilities

We have 35 employees that work in the Roads and Streets Department to provide summer and winter street maintenance services on 389.6 center line miles and over 1,550 lane miles of asphalt and concrete roadway street surfaces. The employees are responsible for the following:
